Description

Delicious and fun to make, Cinnamon French Toast Roll Ups are a creative twist on traditional French toast. Soft bread slices are rolled with a cinnamon-sugar butter filling, dipped in a sweet egg mixture, and pan-fried until golden brown. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, these roll ups are served warm and can be dusted with powdered sugar and paired with maple syrup for extra indulgence.

Ingredients

For the Cinnamon Filling

  • 1/2 stick butter, softened (about 4 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tsp ground cinnamon

For the Egg Mixture

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons milk

For the Coating

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or to taste)

Other Ingredients

  • 10-12 slices of bread, crusts removed
  • 2 tablespoons butter for cooking (more if necessary)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cinnamon Filling: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, light brown sugar, and 3 teaspoons of cinnamon. Beat the mixture until smooth and well blended.
  2. Mix the Sugar-Cinnamon Coating: In a separate bowl, combine the granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Set this aside for rolling the finished toast later.
  3. Make the Egg Mixture: In a shallow bowl, beat together the eggs and milk. Set this aside for dipping the roll ups.
  4. Prepare the Bread: Remove the crusts from each bread slice. Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice to about 1/8 inch thickness to make it easier to roll without tearing.
  5. Assemble the Roll Ups: Spread a thick layer of the cinnamon butter filling evenly over each flattened bread slice. Then, carefully and tightly roll up the bread around the filling, sealing it as you go. Continue this process with all slices.
  6. Heat the Pan and Cook: Preheat a non-stick skillet or pan over medium heat and add about 1 tablespoon of butter. Working in batches (3-4 roll ups at a time), coat each roll up evenly in the egg mixture, then place them seam side down in the pan.
  7. Brown the Roll Ups: Cook the roll ups, turning a quarter turn frequently, until all sides are evenly browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes total per batch. Add more butter as needed between batches.
  8. Finishing Touches: Once cooked, roll the warm French toast roll ups in the cinnamon sugar mixture or dust with powdered sugar. Serve immediately, with maple syrup on the side if desired.

Notes

  • Removing the crust and flattening the bread prevents tearing and helps the roll ups hold together better.
  • Use day-old bread or slightly stale bread for easier rolling and better texture.
  • You can customize the cinnamon-sugar ratio to your taste.
  • Cook the roll ups over medium heat to avoid burning while ensuring they cook through.
  • Serve immediately for best taste, as they are best warm and fresh.
