Description

This Amish Cinnamon Bread is a moist, sweet, and warmly spiced loaf perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Swirled with a cinnamon-sugar mixture, it’s easy to make and bakes to a golden perfection with a tender crumb and delightful cinnamon flavor in every bite.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk (see notes for substitutions)

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan to ensure the bread does not stick after baking.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a mixing bowl, use a mixer to cream the softened butter with 1 cup of granulated sugar until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla: To the butter and sugar mixture, add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix well until fully incorporated and smooth.
  4. Mix dry ingredients: In a separate medium bowl, combine the 2 cups of flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir until evenly mixed.
  5. Combine wet and dry ingredients gradually: Add half of the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture in the mixing bowl, followed by half of the buttermilk. Mix gently until just combined. Then add the remaining flour mixture and buttermilk, mixing again just until blended to avoid overmixing.
  6. Prepare cinnamon sugar: In a small bowl, mix together the 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon to create the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  7. Layer batter and cinnamon sugar: Spoon about half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle two-thirds of the cinnamon sugar evenly over the batter. Use a butter knife to swirl the cinnamon sugar throughout the batter gently.
  8. Add remaining batter and topping: Spoon the remaining batter on top of the cinnamon layer and smooth the surface with a spatula. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar evenly over the top of the batter.
  9. Bake the bread: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes. The bread is done when it turns golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool the bread: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then carefully remove it from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before using.
  • Use room temperature ingredients for best creaming results and even batter mixing.
  • This bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated for up to a week.
  • For an extra touch, you can drizzle a glaze made from powdered sugar and milk once the bread has cooled.
