Perfect for celebrating love and sweetness, these cookies are easy to bake and decorate with colorful sprinkles for a charming Valentine’s Day dessert.

Ingredients

The Best Sugar Cookie Dough

  • 1 cup Butter (Salted Sweet Cream, softened to room temperature)
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 3 cups All-Purpose Flour

Other Ingredients

  • The Best Buttercream Frosting (prepared)
  • Valentine’s Day NonPareils Sprinkles
  • Heart Cookie Cutter Set
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Pink
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Crimson

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, which usually takes a few minutes using an electric mixer on medium speed.
  2. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the large egg and vanilla extract until the ingredients are thoroughly combined, ensuring an even batter.
  3. Mix Baking Powder: Add the baking powder to the mixture and blend well to incorporate it evenly throughout the dough.
  4. Add Flour Gradually: Slowly add the all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, mixing just until combined after each addition to form a smooth, workable cookie dough.
  5. Roll Out Dough and Cut Shapes: Roll out the completed cookie dough to about 5/8 inch thickness on a floured surface. Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the cookie bites.
  6. Bake Cookies: Place the cut-out dough pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (177°C) for 5-6 minutes. Begin checking the cookies at 4 minutes to avoid overbaking. The cookies are done when the edges turn slightly golden.
  7. Cool Cookies: Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating to prevent melting the frosting.
  8. Prepare Frosting Colors: Divide the prepared buttercream frosting into three portions. Leave one portion white. Add 1 drop of pink food coloring to the second portion for light pink frosting. For the red frosting, mix 4 drops of crimson and 1 drop of pink food coloring into the third portion to achieve a rich red shade.
  9. Frost Cookies: Spread or pipe the colored frostings onto the cooled cookie bites evenly.
  10. Decorate with Sprinkles: Sprinkle Valentine’s Day NonPareils sprinkles onto the frosted cookies while the frosting is still soft to add texture and festive color.

Notes

  • For the red frosting color, combine 4 drops of Crimson and 1 drop of Pink Wilton Color Right Food Coloring to get a vibrant hue.
  • To achieve light pink frosting, add only 1 drop of Wilton Color Right Pink food coloring.
  • Ensure cookies are completely cooled before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream.
  • Roll dough evenly to maintain uniform cookie thickness and even baking.
  • Check cookies early in the baking process since thickness affects baking time.
