Description

This Turnip Apple Crumble is a delicious and unique holiday side dish combining sweet apples and tender turnips topped with a buttery gluten-free crumble. Perfect for getting everyone, even picky eaters and kids, to enjoy turnips at your festive feast.

Ingredients

Turnip and Apple Mixture

  • 1 turnip
  • 4 cups apples, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free All Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the crumble later.
  2. Cook Turnip in Microwave: Fold a paper towel and place it in a microwave-safe dish. Stand the turnip on its end on top of the paper towel. Microwave on high for 10 minutes, then turn the turnip onto its other end and microwave for another 10 minutes to soften it.
  3. Prepare Apples and Crumble Topping: While the turnip cooks, place the sliced apples in a microwave-safe bowl. Add the granulated sugar, water, and cinnamon, and set aside. In a separate small bowl, mix the gluten-free flour, brown sugar, margarine, and salt to prepare the crumble topping.
  4. Let Turnip Rest: Once the turnip is cooked, remove from the microwave and let it stand for 5 minutes to cool slightly.
  5. Cook Apples: Cover the apple mixture with wax paper and microwave on high for 7 to 9 minutes, stirring once halfway through, to soften the apples.
  6. Peel Turnip: Cut one end off the turnip and use two forks to peel the skin down. Turn over and remove the other end, peeling off the skin completely.
  7. Mash Turnip and Apples: Place the peeled turnip into a mixing bowl. Mash the cooked apple sauce using a potato masher. Add half a cup of the apple sauce to the turnip and mash together until smooth and no large chunks remain.
  8. Assemble Layers: Spray a small casserole dish with cooking spray. Layer one-third of the mashed turnip mixture on the bottom. Top with half of the remaining apple sauce (about 1 cup). Repeat the layering and end with turnip on top.
  9. Add Crumble Topping and Bake: Spread the crumble topping evenly over the final layer of turnip. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 1 hour until the top is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  10. Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm alongside your favorite holiday meal.

Notes

  • You can use a russet or granny smith apple for a tart flavor that balances the sweetness.
  • For ease, use margarine or butter that is firm but easily mixable.
  • Make sure to microwave the turnip thoroughly for a tender texture in the crumble.
  • This recipe is naturally gluten free when using a certified gluten-free flour blend, great for gluten intolerant guests.
  • Let the crumble cool slightly after baking to allow flavors to meld before serving.
