Ingredients
Tuna Salad
- 1 (12 oz) can solid white tuna, well drained
- 1/3 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup chopped red onion
- 1/4 cup finely chopped baby dill pickles
- 2 Tbsp minced parsley
- 1 Tbsp minced dill
- 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Sandwich
- 6 hearty bread slices (such as sourdough or whole wheat)
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or 6 slices cheddar)
- 3 Tbsp softened butter
Instructions
- Prepare Tuna Salad: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, chopped red onion, finely chopped baby dill pickles, minced parsley, minced dill, and fresh lemon juice. Mix well and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Butter Bread Slices: Spread 1/2 tablespoon of the softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Place 3 slices of bread buttered side down on a flat surface. Evenly distribute the tuna salad over these slices, then layer tomato slices and shredded cheddar cheese on top of the tuna.
- Top Sandwiches: Place the remaining 3 bread slices on top with the buttered sides facing up, completing the sandwich assembly.
- Heat Skillet: Preheat a 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium-low heat to ensure even cooking without burning.
- Cook Sandwiches: Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 2 to 3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwiches to cook the other side for another 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and the cheese inside is melted.
- Serve: Once cooked, slice each tuna melt in half and serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Use hearty bread like sourdough or whole wheat for best texture and flavor.
- Make sure tuna is well drained to avoid soggy sandwiches.
- Cook over medium-low heat to prevent burning while allowing cheese to melt properly.
- You can substitute cheddar with your preferred melting cheese.
- For added flavor, consider toasting the bread lightly before assembling.
