Description
A classic Italian Tomato Caprese Salad featuring fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and fragrant basil leaves, drizzled with high-quality olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. This simple, elegant salad is quick to prepare and perfect as a light appetizer or side dish.
Ingredients
Salad Ingredients
- 8 oz fresh mozzarella cheese ball, sliced
- 2 large ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced
- About 20 fresh basil leaves
- Fresh ground black pepper, to taste
- Sea salt, to taste
Dressing
- High quality olive oil, for drizzling
- Aged balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction, for drizzling
Instructions
- Arrange the layers: On a plate or serving dish, alternately layer the fresh mozzarella slices and tomato slices. Place a whole basil leaf between each layer to infuse flavor and add visual appeal. Chop any remaining basil leaves and sprinkle them over the top of the salad.
- Season and dress: Season the layered salad generously with fresh ground black pepper and sea salt. Drizzle high-quality olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar or balsamic reduction evenly over the top.
- Serve or chill: Serve the salad immediately for the freshest taste or cover and chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. The salad is best served fresh but can be stored covered in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
Notes
- Use ripe, flavorful tomatoes for the best taste.
- Fresh mozzarella should be at room temperature for optimal flavor.
- For a sweeter balsamic note, use a balsamic reduction instead of regular vinegar.
- This salad is best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.
- If preparing ahead, add the olive oil and balsamic just before serving to preserve freshness.
