Description
This delightful cranberry apple crisp combines tart cranberries and sweet honey crisp apples under a buttery, cinnamon-spiced oat topping. Baked to golden perfection, it makes a comforting dessert perfect for fall and holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Fruit Filling
- 3 large honey crisp apples
- 1 1/2 cups cranberries (fresh or frozen)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons corn starch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Crisp Topping
- 2/3 cup flour
- 3/4 cup oats
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup butter (cold, cut into cubes)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the crisp.
- Prepare Fruit Filling: Peel and chop the apples, then combine them in a large bowl with the cranberries, brown sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly to coat the fruit evenly. Transfer this mixture into a 9-inch pie plate or an 8×8-inch square baking dish.
- Make the Topping: In a separate large bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and vanilla extract, then use a pastry cutter or clean hands to blend until the mixture becomes crumbly and pea-sized.
- Assemble and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crumbly topping over the fruit filling. Place the baking dish on a baking sheet to catch any leaks and bake in the oven for 55 minutes, until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the cranberry apple crisp to rest for 5 to 10 minutes so the filling can set. Serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Using cold butter helps create a crumbly, crisp topping texture.
- Place the baking dish on a sheet pan to avoid drips in your oven from the juicy filling bubbling over.
- Fresh or frozen cranberries can both be used.
- For extra flavor, try adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the topping.
- This dessert is best served warm, pairing beautifully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
