Description

A delicious and indulgent twist on traditional nachos, this Tater Tot Nachos recipe layers crispy baked tater tots with seasoned taco meat, melted cheddar cheese, and your favorite nacho toppings for a crowd-pleasing party dish.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound prepared taco meat
  • 3 lb frozen tater tots
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese

Optional Toppings

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup sliced olives
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 1/2 cup pico de gallo or salsa
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 450°F (232°C) to ensure it reaches the right temperature for baking the tater tots until they’re perfectly crispy.
  2. Prepare tater tots: Evenly spread half of the frozen tater tots on one baking sheet and the remaining half on a second baking sheet. This division helps them bake evenly and become crisp.
  3. Bake tater tots: Place both baking sheets in the oven and bake the tater tots for 30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy, checking for even cooking.
  4. Layer first portion: Sprinkle half of the prepared taco meat over the cooked tater tots on one baking sheet, then evenly distribute half of the grated cheddar cheese on top of the meat.
  5. Combine tater tots: Remove the second baking sheet with the other half of baked tater tots from the oven and carefully pour them over the layered tater tots with meat and cheese on the first sheet, creating a layered effect.
  6. Add remaining toppings: Sprinkle the remaining taco meat and cheese over the top of the combined tater tots. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until the cheese has fully melted and the dish is heated through.
  7. Serve with toppings: Remove from the oven and garnish with optional toppings such as sour cream, sliced olives, diced avocado, pico de gallo or salsa, chopped cilantro, and sliced jalapeños according to your taste preferences.

Notes

  • Use prepared taco meat for convenience or make your own seasoned ground beef or turkey for a fresher flavor.
  • For extra crispiness, spread tater tots in a single layer without crowding.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with a blend of Monterey Jack or Pepper Jack for extra flavor.
  • Feel free to add other toppings such as jalapeño slices or pickled jalapeños for more heat.
  • This recipe serves 8 as a hearty snack or appetizer, perfect for parties.
