Description

Tamago Kake Gohan is a traditional Japanese-inspired rice bowl featuring piping hot brown rice mixed with a raw egg and tamari, cooked gently by the heat of the rice to create a creamy, risotto-like texture. It’s a simple, wholesome dish perfect for a healthy breakfast or dinner, enhanced with fresh scallions, sesame seeds, and optional toppings like nori, pickled ginger, or avocado slices.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 cups very hot cooked brown rice
  • 2 eggs
  • Splashes of tamari, to taste
  • 1 scallion, finely chopped
  • Sesame seeds, for sprinkling

Optional Toppings

  • Extra egg yolks
  • Thinly sliced nori
  • Japanese pickles or pickled ginger
  • Microgreens
  • Splash of rice vinegar or umeboshi vinegar
  • Avocado slices
  • Roasted broccoli

Other

  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Ensure the brown rice is freshly cooked and very hot, ideally steamed or boiled, to provide enough heat for gently cooking the egg when combined.
  2. Combine Egg and Rice: Divide the hot cooked brown rice into two bowls. Crack one raw egg into each bowl, along with splashes of tamari. Stir vigorously and quickly so the egg gently cooks and coats the rice, yielding a creamy, risotto-like texture.
  3. Add Toppings: Sprinkle finely chopped scallions and sesame seeds over each bowl. Add any optional toppings you prefer, such as extra egg yolks, sliced nori, pickled ginger, microgreens, rice or umeboshi vinegar, avocado slices, or roasted broccoli.
  4. Serve: Drizzle extra-virgin olive oil if desired and serve immediately with extra tamari on the side for additional seasoning.

Notes

  • Use very hot rice to ensure the egg cooks safely and achieves the creamy texture.
  • Use tamari as a gluten-free soy sauce alternative for authentic flavor.
  • Optional toppings add various flavors and textures, so customize to your liking.
  • Consuming raw egg carries a small risk; use fresh, high-quality eggs to minimize risk.
  • This dish is traditionally eaten immediately after preparation for best taste and texture.
