Description

A hearty and comforting Slow Cooker Salisbury Steaks recipe featuring tender ground beef patties simmered with mushrooms and onions in a rich, flavorful gravy. Slow cooking ensures juicy steaks and a thick, savory sauce perfect for serving over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

For the Steaks

  • 1 1/3 pounds Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 tablespoon Steak Seasoning
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Onion Flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Parsley
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or Italian)
  • 1 Egg

For the Slow Cooker Base and Gravy

  • 1 cup Baby Portabello Mushrooms (Sliced)
  • 1 Onion (Thinly sliced)
  • 3 tablespoons Cornstarch (divided)
  • 2 cups Beef Broth
  • 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Spray a large 6-quart oval slow cooker with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Layer the sliced mushrooms and thinly sliced onions evenly on the bottom of the slow cooker.
  2. Make the beef mixture: In a large bowl, combine the lean ground beef with steak seasoning, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, dried onion flakes, dried parsley, breadcrumbs, and the egg. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Form patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped, thin patties. Place the patties evenly in the slow cooker over the mushrooms and onions, making sure not to stack them to allow even cooking.
  4. Prepare and add gravy mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together beef broth, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, and black pepper until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the beef patties in the slow cooker.
  5. Cook: Cover with the slow cooker lid and cook on high heat for 4 hours, allowing the steaks to become tender and absorb the flavors.
  6. Remove patties: Once cooked, carefully remove the Salisbury steaks from the slow cooker and set aside to keep warm.
  7. Thicken the gravy: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water to create a slurry. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker gravy and mix well. Let it cook for a few minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  8. Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks and spoon the mushroom and onion gravy over the top. Serve alongside egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes for a classic, comforting meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Using lean ground beef reduces excess fat, keeping the dish hearty but not greasy.
  • Do not stack patties in the slow cooker to ensure even cooking and proper browning.
  • Use plain or Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs depending on your flavor preference.
  • Adjust Worcestershire sauce quantity to your taste for more umami depth.
  • The gravy can be thickened further by adding more cornstarch slurry if desired.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or oats.
