Description
A hearty and comforting Slow Cooker Salisbury Steaks recipe featuring tender ground beef patties simmered with mushrooms and onions in a rich, flavorful gravy. Slow cooking ensures juicy steaks and a thick, savory sauce perfect for serving over egg noodles or mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
For the Steaks
- 1 1/3 pounds Lean Ground Beef
- 1 tablespoon Steak Seasoning
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce (divided)
- 1 teaspoon Dried Onion Flakes
- 1 teaspoon Dried Parsley
- 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or Italian)
- 1 Egg
For the Slow Cooker Base and Gravy
- 1 cup Baby Portabello Mushrooms (Sliced)
- 1 Onion (Thinly sliced)
- 3 tablespoons Cornstarch (divided)
- 2 cups Beef Broth
- 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper
Instructions
- Prepare the slow cooker: Spray a large 6-quart oval slow cooker with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Layer the sliced mushrooms and thinly sliced onions evenly on the bottom of the slow cooker.
- Make the beef mixture: In a large bowl, combine the lean ground beef with steak seasoning, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, dried onion flakes, dried parsley, breadcrumbs, and the egg. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
- Form patties: Divide the beef mixture into 4 to 6 oval-shaped, thin patties. Place the patties evenly in the slow cooker over the mushrooms and onions, making sure not to stack them to allow even cooking.
- Prepare and add gravy mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together beef broth, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, and black pepper until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the beef patties in the slow cooker.
- Cook: Cover with the slow cooker lid and cook on high heat for 4 hours, allowing the steaks to become tender and absorb the flavors.
- Remove patties: Once cooked, carefully remove the Salisbury steaks from the slow cooker and set aside to keep warm.
- Thicken the gravy: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water to create a slurry. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker gravy and mix well. Let it cook for a few minutes until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks and spoon the mushroom and onion gravy over the top. Serve alongside egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes for a classic, comforting meal. Enjoy!
Notes
- Using lean ground beef reduces excess fat, keeping the dish hearty but not greasy.
- Do not stack patties in the slow cooker to ensure even cooking and proper browning.
- Use plain or Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs depending on your flavor preference.
- Adjust Worcestershire sauce quantity to your taste for more umami depth.
- The gravy can be thickened further by adding more cornstarch slurry if desired.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs or oats.
