Ingredients
Meat
- 1 – 1 1/2 lb lean ground turkey or extra lean ground beef
Vegetables
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 1/2 cup chopped green pepper
- 3 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 small head green cabbage, coarsely chopped
Seasonings
- 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Canned Goods
- 1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce (optionally add another 8-15 ounces for more sauce)
Instructions
- Prepare the slow cooker: Spray the crock pot with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Add the ground meat: Crumble the raw ground turkey or beef and spread it evenly along the bottom of the crock pot.
- Add vegetables and seasonings: Layer the chopped onions, green pepper, crushed garlic, salt, pepper, thyme, and chopped cabbage on top of the meat.
- Pour diced tomatoes: Pour the undrained can of diced tomatoes evenly over the layered ingredients.
- Add tomato sauce and sugar: Mix the sugar into the tomato sauce and pour it over everything in the crock pot. If you prefer more sauce, add an additional 8- to 15-ounce can of tomato sauce.
- Cook: Cover and cook on low for about 8 hours or on high for approximately 4 hours, allowing flavors to meld and ingredients to become tender.
- Finish and serve: When cooking is complete, remove the lid and stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients. Serve warm.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey for a leaner option.
- Adding an extra can of tomato sauce will increase the sauciness and moisture.
- For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or chopped jalapeños.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated within 3 days.
- This dish pairs well with crusty bread or steamed rice.
