Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
- 8 ounces tomato sauce
- 3 ounces tomato paste (1/2 of a 6 ounce can)
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 pound cheddar-jack cheese, shredded
Other Ingredients
- 13 ounce bag of Frito-Lay TOSTITOS® Original Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips
- Optional: sliced green onions
- Optional: chopped tomatoes
Instructions
- Cook the Meat and Vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, chopped onions, and chopped green bell pepper until the meat is browned and cooked thoroughly. Drain off any excess fat to prevent greasiness.
- Add Sauces and Spices: Reduce heat to low or medium-low. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water until the mixture is well combined. Then add brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly and cook until the mixture is hot. Remove skillet from heat once done.
- Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degrees Celsius) to prepare for melting the cheese and warming the chips.
- Layer the Nachos: Using a metal pie plate or an oven-safe dish, start by placing a layer of TOSTITOS tortilla chips. Spoon a few scoops of the sloppy joe meat mixture over the chips, then sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheddar-jack cheese on top. Repeat layering with the remaining chips, meat, and cheese to create multiple layers.
- Bake to Melt Cheese: Place the assembled nachos in the preheated oven and bake for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is hot and fully melted.
- Add Toppings and Serve: Remove the nachos from the oven and immediately top with optional sliced green onions and chopped tomatoes for added freshness and color. Serve warm.
Notes
- Ingredients and serving sizes are approximate and may be adjusted based on personal preference or party size.
- Any oven-safe pan can be used; metal pie plates work well for individual servings, while a large baking sheet is suitable for bigger groups.
- To vary the spice level, adjust the amount of red pepper flakes according to your taste.
- This recipe works well with different types of cheese if cheddar-jack is unavailable.
