Description

This seasoned rice recipe is a simple and flavorful way to prepare long grain brown rice. Infused with garlic powder, thyme, and a hint of crushed red pepper, this dish offers a deliciously aromatic and mildly spicy side that pairs well with a variety of main courses. Perfectly cooked by simmering on the stovetop until tender, it’s an easy, healthy, and satisfying addition to any meal.

Ingredients

Rice and Seasonings

  • 2 cups long grain brown rice
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper (optional)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the brown rice, garlic powder, dried thyme, crushed red pepper (if using), salt, and water. Stir briefly to ensure all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  2. Bring to Boil and Simmer: Cover the pot with a lid and heat over high until the water reaches a full boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, keeping the pot covered, and let the rice simmer gently for 40 minutes, allowing it to absorb the water and cook through.
  3. Rest the Rice: After simmering, turn off the heat but keep the lid on. Let the rice rest undisturbed for 5 more minutes to finish cooking with residual steam and to ensure it becomes fluffy.
  4. Fluff and Serve: Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains. Serve immediately as a side dish or allow to cool before refrigerating for later use.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, increase the crushed red pepper to 1/2 tsp.
  • Use low-sodium salt if you want to reduce the sodium content.
  • To save time, rinse the rice before cooking to remove excess starch and improve texture.
  • Leftover rice can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • For added flavor, consider sautéing the garlic powder and thyme in a bit of oil before adding water and rice.
