Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, loosely packed
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
Mix-ins and Toppings
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- Maldon flaked salt, for topping
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease or brush melted brown butter over the bottom and sides of a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt to combine, then set aside.
- Bake Butter to Brown: Place unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, letting the butter bubble until brown bits form on the bottom. Once browned, turn off the heat and stir for 30 seconds. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- Combine Sugar and Butter: In a large bowl, pour the browned butter over the light brown sugar and mix until the sugar begins to dissolve and the mixture is smooth.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time to the butter-sugar mixture, stirring immediately after each addition to prevent cooking the eggs if the butter is still warm. Then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Using a wooden spoon, gradually stir in the dry flour mixture until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the bars tender.
- Mix in Chocolate Chips: Fold in both milk and dark chocolate chips evenly throughout the batter.
- Bake: Press the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Add Salt and Cool: Immediately after removing from the oven, sprinkle the top with Maldon flaked salt. Allow the bars to cool completely in the dish before slicing into 12 squares for serving.
Notes
- Make sure to let the browned butter cool slightly before adding eggs to prevent scrambling.
- The browning of butter adds a deep nutty flavor that enhances the cookies’ richness.
- If you want more texture, consider adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans.
- Use a sharp knife to cut into the bars once cooled for clean edges.
- Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or freeze for longer storage.
