Description
This cozy Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate is a perfect blend of rich chocolate and warm autumn spices. Made with pumpkin puree, a hint of vanilla, and a comforting mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, this hot chocolate offers a seasonal twist on a classic treat. It’s easy to prepare on the stovetop and can be customized with semisweet or white chocolate depending on your preference.
Ingredients
Liquid Base
- 1-1/4 cups milk (whole or 2% for best results)
Spices and Flavorings
- 1-2 tablespoons pumpkin puree (depending on how rich you like it)
- 1-2 tablespoons light brown sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
- pinch ground cloves
- pinch kosher or sea salt
Chocolate
- 3 ounces semisweet chocolate (finely chopped or about 1/2 cup chips) OR
- 2 ounces white chocolate (finely chopped or about 1/3 cup chips, instead of semisweet chocolate)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a small pot, whisk together milk, pumpkin puree, light brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground ginger, ground cloves, and a pinch of kosher or sea salt until well blended and smooth.
- Heat Mixture: Place the pot over medium-low heat and warm the liquid, stirring occasionally, until bubbles start to form around the edges of the pot. Be careful not to boil.
- Add Chocolate: Reduce the heat to low, then add the finely chopped semisweet or white chocolate to the pot. Stir or whisk continuously until the chocolate is completely melted, the mixture is glossy, and it thickens slightly, about 1-2 minutes.
- Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into a mug. For an extra indulgent touch, top with lightly-sweetened whipped cream and a dusting of ground cinnamon. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- You can omit the brown sugar if you prefer a less sweet version.
- For a variation, use white chocolate instead of semisweet to give a creamier, sweeter flavor.
- Brown Sugar Whipped Cream: Whip heavy cream with a tablespoon of brown sugar for an autumn-inspired topping.
- Bourbon Spike: Add a splash (about 1 tablespoon) of bourbon to the hot chocolate for an adult version.
