Perfect for a comforting breakfast or brunch, it’s easy to make and delicious when served with butter, additional maple syrup, and fresh fruit.
Ingredients
For the French Toast Batter
- 8 slices brioche bread (or other thick-cut bread such as challah, French bread, or sandwich bread)
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup whole milk
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (or granulated sugar)
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For Cooking and Serving
- Butter or cooking spray (for cooking)
- Butter and maple syrup (as desired, for serving)
- Fresh fruit (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: Crack the eggs into a wide, shallow dish. Add the milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Whisk everything together thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Heat the skillet: Place a large nonstick skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of butter, or spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking and add flavor.
- Soak the bread: Working in batches, dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, making sure to flip and coat both sides evenly. Allow the bread to absorb the batter without becoming overly soggy.
- Cook the French toast: Place the soaked bread slices onto the heated skillet. Cook for a few minutes on each side until they develop a golden brown crust. Repeat the process with the remaining bread, adding more butter or cooking spray to the pan as needed to keep the French toast from sticking.
- Serve: Serve the French toast warm topped with butter, maple syrup, and optionally fresh fruit. Enjoy immediately for best taste and texture.
Notes
- Use thick-cut bread such as brioche or challah for the best texture and flavor.
- Whole milk adds richness, but you can substitute with any milk of your choice.
- Maple syrup in the batter adds sweetness and depth; granulated sugar can be used as an alternative.
- Cook over medium heat to ensure the bread cooks through without burning.
- Serve immediately to enjoy the toast crisp on the outside and soft inside.
