Description

These Pepperoni Pizza Rolls are a fun and delicious twist on classic pizza, featuring homemade pizza dough rolled with savory pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni slices. Perfect as a party appetizer or a satisfying snack, they bake up crispy on the outside with a gooey, flavorful filling inside. Chilling the dough logs before slicing helps keep the rolls intact during baking, and an optional cornmeal coating adds a delightful crunch to the bottom. Serve warm with extra pizza sauce and fresh basil for a crowd-pleasing treat everyone will love.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 recipe homemade pizza dough*
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil

Filling

  • 2/3 cup pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • Italian seasoning or ground basil, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 60-65 pepperoni slices

Optional

  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • Extra mozzarella cheese for topping
  • Fresh basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Follow your homemade pizza dough recipe through step 4. Once the dough is ready, punch it down to release air bubbles. Divide the dough in half and roll each half into a 10×12 inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  2. Season the Dough: Lightly brush the top of each rectangle with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Use your fingers to press dents into the dough surface to prevent bubbling. Spread 1/3 cup pizza sauce evenly over each rectangle, then sprinkle with Italian seasoning and garlic powder to taste.
  3. Add Cheese and Pepperoni: Evenly sprinkle 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella over each sauce-coated rectangle. Top with pepperoni slices evenly distributed. Carefully roll each rectangle into a tight log and place seam-side down on a baking sheet. Refrigerate uncovered for at least 20 minutes to firm up the rolls for easier slicing.
  4. Preheat the Oven: While the logs chill, preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line two large baking sheets with silicone mats or parchment paper.
  5. Slice and Coat: Remove the dough logs from the refrigerator and cut each into twelve 1-inch slices. Pour yellow cornmeal onto a plate and dip the bottom of each slice into the cornmeal for extra crispiness, then arrange 12 rolls on each prepared baking sheet, cornmeal side down. Optionally, sprinkle the tops with extra mozzarella cheese.
  6. Bake: Bake the pizza rolls for 15-20 minutes until the edges are lightly browned and crispy. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
  7. Serve: Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve immediately with extra pizza sauce for dipping. Store any leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.

Notes

  • Chilling the rolled dough before slicing helps keep the rolls intact and prevents them from falling apart during baking.
  • The cornmeal coating on the bottom is optional but adds a nice crispy texture and prevents sticking.
  • Feel free to use store-bought pizza dough to save time.
  • Extra mozzarella on top adds more cheesy goodness and a beautiful golden color.
  • Serve warm and fresh for best flavor and texture.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for a few days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
