Ingredients
Puff Pastry Stars
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons raw turbinado sugar
Pear Filling
- 4 Harry and David Royal Riviera Pears, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 pinch ground ginger
For Serving
- Vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease cleanup.
- Cut Puff Pastry Stars: Using a small star-shaped cookie cutter, cut shapes out of the thawed puff pastry sheet. Brush each piece with the beaten egg to give a golden color and sprinkle with raw turbinado sugar for added sweetness and crunch.
- Bake Puff Pastry: Place the puff pastry stars on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until they puff up and turn golden brown.
- Cook Pear Filling: While the pastry bakes, heat a skillet over medium heat and melt the unsalted butter. Add the peeled and sliced pears and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes until they soften slightly. Then stir in brown sugar, ground cinnamon, salt, freshly grated nutmeg, and a pinch of ground ginger. Continue cooking for an additional 5 minutes until the pears are tender and fragrant.
- Assemble Mug Pies: Spoon the warm pear filling into the bottom of mugs. Top each with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and garnish with several of the baked puff pastry stars for a delightful crunch and presentation.
Notes
- Use ripe but firm pears to ensure they hold their shape during cooking.
- If you don’t have a star-shaped cookie cutter, any small shape will work for the puff pastry.
- Make sure the puff pastry is well thawed before cutting to prevent cracking.
- Serve immediately after assembling so the puff pastry remains crisp and the ice cream doesn’t melt too quickly.
- You can substitute brown sugar with coconut sugar for a different flavor profile.
