Description
Mini muffuletta sandwiches are a flavorful New Orleans-inspired appetizer featuring bite-sized dinner rolls layered with an assortment of sliced meats, cheeses, and a salty olive salad. These sandwiches are assembled, chilled for 24 hours to meld the flavors, and served cold, making them perfect for parties or gatherings.
Ingredients
Sandwich Ingredients
- 1 package of 12 dinner rolls
- 16 ounces sliced salami
- 8 ounces sliced ham
- 12 ounces sliced provolone cheese
- 12 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
- 8 ounces sliced mortadella
- 2 cups olive salad
Instructions
- Prepare the Rolls: Lay the dinner rolls out on a cutting board. Using a serrated knife, carefully cut each roll in half lengthwise, making sure to cut only the top part so the bottoms remain connected and intact.
- Remove the Tops: Gently lift and remove the tops of the rolls and set them aside for later reassembly.
- Layer the Meats and Cheeses: Begin layering the sandwich fillings on the bottom halves by placing two layers of salami first, followed by two layers of ham, then the provolone, Swiss cheese, and finally the mortadella. Add another layer of salami on top for a flavorful finish.
- Spread Olive Salad: Evenly spread the olive salad over the top layer of salami, distributing it to cover all sandwiches equally.
- Reassemble the Sandwiches: Place the tops of the rolls back onto the layered bottoms. Use the natural cuts in the top rolls as guides to slice the big sandwich into 12 individual mini muffuletta sandwiches.
- Chill and Marinate: Wrap the sandwiches tightly in plastic wrap or cover them, then refrigerate for 24 hours. This resting period allows the flavors to meld beautifully for the authentic muffuletta taste.
- Serve: Serve the mini muffuletta sandwiches cold directly from the refrigerator, perfect for appetizers or party platters.
Notes
- Storage: Wrap mini muffulettas tightly in plastic wrap or store in an airtight container and refrigerate within two hours of assembly. Consume within four days for optimal freshness.
- Freezing: For longer storage, wrap sandwiches in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil to protect from freezer burn. Store in a freezer-safe spot where sandwiches won’t get crushed. Eat within three months and thaw completely in the refrigerator before serving.
