Description

Mini Muffulettas are bite-sized versions of the classic New Orleans sandwich, featuring layers of Italian cold cuts, cheeses, and a tangy olive salad packed with Castelvetrano and black olives, giardiniera vegetables, capers, and olive oil. Perfect as party appetizers or finger foods, these flavorful sandwich bites combine savory, briny, and tangy elements in every bite.

Ingredients

Olive Salad

  • 1 cup pitted Castelvetrano olives, chopped
  • 1 cup pickled vegetables from jarred giardiniera mix, finely chopped
  • ½ cup pitted black olives, chopped
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons pickling liquid from giardiniera
  • 1 tablespoon capers, finely chopped

Sandwich

  • 1 (6 by 14-inch long) loaf ciabatta bread, sliced in half lengthwise
  • ½ pound thinly sliced Capicola
  • ½ pound thinly sliced Mortadella
  • ½ pound thinly sliced Genoa salami
  • pound thinly sliced Mozzarella cheese
  • pound thinly sliced Provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Make the olive salad: In a medium bowl, combine chopped Castelvetrano olives, pickled giardiniera vegetables, black olives, olive oil, pickling liquid from the giardiniera, and chopped capers. Mix well to blend flavors.
  2. Chill olive salad: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the olive salad until you are ready to assemble the sandwiches, allowing the flavors to meld.
  3. Prepare the bread: Slice the ciabatta loaf lengthwise into two even halves, creating a bottom and top piece to build your sandwich on.
  4. Layer the meats and cheeses: On the bottom half of the ciabatta bread, layer the cold cuts and cheeses in the order of capicola, mozzarella, mortadella, provolone, and Genoa salami, ensuring even coverage.
  5. Add the olive salad: Spoon the chilled olive salad evenly over the layered meats and cheeses on the bread, spreading to cover the entire surface.
  6. Form the sandwich: Place the top half of the ciabatta loaf over the olive salad, pressing gently to form a compact sandwich.
  7. Wrap and chill: Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve, which helps the flavors to meld and the sandwich to set.
  8. Serve: Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the large sandwich into 24 bite-sized pieces. Secure each piece with a wooden pick for easy serving at gatherings or parties.

Notes

  • For best flavor, allow the sandwich to chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
  • You can prepare the olive salad and sandwich assembly up to one day ahead to save time.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add some sliced hot giardiniera vegetables to the olive salad.
  • Use a serrated knife for clean cuts without squashing the sandwich.
  • If you want gluten-free, substitute the ciabatta bread with gluten-free sandwich bread of similar size.
