Ingredients
Ingredients
- 3 cups rice Chex cereal (divided)
- 1/2 cup yellow candy melts
- 1/2 cup green candy melts
- 1/2 cup purple candy melts (called Lavender by Wilton)
- 1 cup powdered sugar (divided)
Instructions
- Prepare the candy melts and bowls: Place each color of candy melts in separate large bowls suitable for mixing cereal, such as deep soup bowls, to prepare for coating.
- Prepare powdered sugar bags: Place one-third cup of powdered sugar into a quart or gallon sized resealable plastic bag to be used for coating the cereal.
- Melt yellow candy melts: Microwave the yellow candy melts according to package instructions, stirring frequently to ensure smooth melting without burning.
- Coat cereal with yellow candy melts: Immediately mix 1 cup of rice Chex cereal into the melted yellow candy melts, gently tossing with a spoon to fully coat each piece.
- Shake with powdered sugar: Transfer the coated cereal into the plastic bag containing powdered sugar, seal it tightly, and shake gently to coat the cereal evenly. Massage the bag gently to separate pieces without breaking them.
- Remove excess sugar: Pour the contents of the bag through a fine mesh sieve over a bowl to shake away any excess powdered sugar from the coated cereal.
- Dry the coated cereal: Spread the coated cereal onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Separate any clustered pieces, dunking them briefly into leftover powdered sugar and shaking again to evenly coat.
- Prepare for next colors: Let the remaining yellow candy melts in the bowl dry for a few minutes, then crinkle up the bag to remove residual candy melts and prepare it for the next color.
- Repeat with green candy melts: Repeat steps 3 to 7 using green candy melts, 1 cup of cereal, and fresh powdered sugar.
- Repeat with purple candy melts: Repeat steps 3 to 7 using purple candy melts, 1 cup of cereal, and fresh powdered sugar.
- Combine and serve: Mix all the colored coated cereal pieces together or keep them separate. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days before serving.
Notes
- Be gentle when shaking the plastic bag to avoid breaking the cereal pieces.
- Use separate bowls and fresh powdered sugar for each candy melt color to prevent color mixing.
- Allow coated cereal to dry completely on a lined baking sheet for best texture.
- Store the puppy chow in an airtight container to maintain freshness for up to 2 days.
- If any cereal pieces stick together after shaking, dunk and shake them again gently in powdered sugar.
