Description

This Honey Garlic Chicken recipe features tender pieces of chicken breast sautéed in a flavorful homemade honey garlic sauce with a hint of spice from Sriracha. Quickly cooked in a skillet for a deliciously sticky coating, it makes for an easy and satisfying weeknight dinner served best over white rice and garnished with sesame seeds and chives.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 to lbs chicken breast (2 large or 4 medium boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces)
  • ½ cup corn starch

Sauce

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • ⅓ cup low sodium soy sauce (or gluten-free soy sauce)
  • ⅓ cup honey (or more to taste)
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp Sriracha sauce (or more to desired spice level)
  • 3 cloves garlic (1 Tbsp minced)
  • 2 Tbsp corn starch
  • 2 Tbsp cold water

Garnish (Optional)

  • Sesame seeds
  • Chives (sliced green onions)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of filtered water, ⅓ cup low sodium soy sauce, ⅓ cup honey, 1 to 2 tablespoons Sriracha sauce, and 1 tablespoon minced garlic. Set the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to blend the flavors.
  2. Thicken the Sauce: In a small dish, mix 2 tablespoons cornstarch with 2 tablespoons cold water to create a slurry. Pour this slurry into the boiling sauce and stir continuously until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy. Reduce the heat to low to keep the sauce warm.
  3. Coat the Chicken: Place the cut chicken pieces into a large zip-top bag. Sprinkle ½ cup cornstarch over the chicken, seal the bag, and toss until the chicken is evenly coated in cornstarch. This will help achieve a slightly crispy texture when cooked.
  4. Cook the Chicken: Heat a large non-stick pan over medium heat and lightly oil the bottom to prevent sticking. Add the chicken pieces in a single layer without crowding the pan. Sauté the chicken for a few minutes on each side until fully cooked through and lightly golden. If needed, cook in batches or use two skillets to speed up the process.
  5. Combine Chicken and Sauce: Once the chicken is cooked, turn off the heat. Pour the warm thickened honey garlic sauce over the chicken in the pan. Stir gently to coat each piece fully, ensuring every bite is flavorful. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
  6. Serve: Serve the honey garlic chicken hot over steamed white rice. Garnish optionally with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and chopped chives or green onions for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of Sriracha to control the spiciness of the dish.
  • Make sure to coat chicken evenly in cornstarch for the best texture.
  • Cooking chicken in batches prevents overcrowding and helps achieve a crispier finish.
  • This recipe pairs perfectly with steamed rice, vegetables, or a simple green salad.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free soy sauce.
