Ingredients
Base Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 clove garlic, minced
Tomato Ingredients
- 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
Seasonings
- 1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- Freshly cracked black pepper (10-15 cranks)
- 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Sauté Garlic: Heat the olive oil in a sauce pot over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until soft and fragrant, taking care not to burn it.
- Add Tomatoes and Seasonings: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, dried basil, dried oregano, freshly cracked black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Mix well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
- Simmer the Sauce: Cover the pot and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes for deeper flavor development, stirring occasionally.
Notes
- Simmering for longer (up to 30 minutes) enhances the flavors.
- Use freshly cracked black pepper for best taste.
- Adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for mild sauce.
- This sauce can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen for longer storage.
