Description

These Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are a quick and easy appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry filled with savory deli ham and melted cheese, enhanced by a flavorful seasoned butter and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning. Perfectly golden and crispy, they are ready in just 35 minutes and make a delightful snack or party finger food.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 6 slices deli ham (such as Black Forest)
  • 8 slices cheese (such as Colby Jack)

Dough

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • Flour for dusting work surface, as needed

Seasoned Butter

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Toppings

  • Everything Bagel Seasoning, as needed
  • Fresh parsley, minced (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Seasoned Butter: In a small bowl, combine the melted unsalted butter and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well and set aside to use later for brushing the pinwheels.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Make sure the oven is fully preheated before assembling the pinwheels. Keep the puff pastry chilled in the refrigerator until ready to assemble.
  3. Prepare Pastry and Fillings: Lightly dust your work surface with flour to prevent sticking. Roll out the puff pastry sheet. Arrange the deli ham slices evenly in a single layer over the pastry, followed by a single layer of cheese slices on top of the ham.
  4. Roll and Slice: Carefully roll the puff pastry lengthwise into a tight log. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into approximately 17 equal slices (about 1 inch thick each).
  5. Bake Initial Layer: Arrange the pinwheel slices cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced slightly apart. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes until the pastry starts to puff and turn golden.
  6. Brush with Seasoned Butter and Add Toppings: Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the prepared seasoned butter. Sprinkle generously with everything bagel seasoning for added flavor.
  7. Final Bake: Return the pinwheels to the oven and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the pinwheels are golden brown and crispy.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven and, if desired, sprinkle with freshly minced parsley for a fresh finish. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious ham and cheese pinwheels!

Notes

  • Keep the puff pastry cold until just before assembling to maintain its flakiness during baking.
  • You can swap the ham and cheese for other deli meats and cheeses according to preference.
  • If you don’t have everything bagel seasoning, a mix of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, and onion flakes works well.
  • Make sure to cut the rolled pastry evenly for uniform pinwheels that bake consistently.
  • These pinwheels can be made ahead of time and baked just before serving for convenience.
