Description

This Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteak is a flavorful twist on the classic sandwich, combining savory sautéed ground beef with onions, garlic, and green peppers, all seasoned perfectly and melted with provolone cheese inside a crispy toasted French bread loaf. Baked to meld the flavors and create a comforting meal perfect for family dinners or game days.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 24 ounces lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, grated
  • 1 green pepper, sliced

Seasoning and Broth

  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Other

  • 1 large French bread loaf or bread of choice
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 8-12 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef: In a pan over medium-high heat, add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink. Drain excess fat from the pan to keep the mixture lean.
  2. Sauté vegetables and season: Add sliced onion, grated garlic, green pepper, steak seasoning, salt, and pepper to the pan with the beef. Sauté until vegetables are tender and fragrant.
  3. Prepare sauce: Mix cornstarch and beef broth in a measuring cup until smooth. Pour this mixture into the pan with the beef and vegetables and let it simmer gently for 1-2 minutes to thicken the sauce slightly.
  4. Prepare the bread base: Slice the French bread loaf in half lengthwise. Slather the bottom half with mayonnaise, then layer four slices of provolone cheese evenly on top.
  5. Add beef mixture: Spoon the warm beef and vegetable mixture over the provolone on the bread, spreading evenly. Then layer four more slices of provolone cheese on top of the beef mixture.
  6. Assemble the sandwich: Place the top half of the bread, also spread with mayonnaise, over the filling to form a sandwich.
  7. Bake: Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 30-35 minutes to melt the cheese and warm through thoroughly.
  8. Serve: Remove from the oven, carefully unwrap the foil, slice the sandwich into portions, and serve immediately while hot and melty.

Notes

  • Use low sodium beef broth to better control the saltiness of the sandwich.
  • Feel free to substitute provolone with mozzarella or American cheese for a different flavor profile.
  • Mayonnaise on the bread adds moisture and richness, but you can substitute with mustard or leave it out if preferred.
  • For a spicier version, add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to the beef mixture.
  • Leftovers can be wrapped tightly and refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated in the oven for best results.
