A delicious and easy-to-make grilled chicken sandwich featuring tender marinated chicken breasts cooked to perfection on the grill, served on toasted buns with honey mustard sauce and your choice of fresh toppings.
Ingredients
Chicken and Marinade
- 1 ½ pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 4 small breasts)
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Sandwich
- 4 hamburger buns (or brioche rolls)
- ¼ cup honey mustard sauce (or mayonnaise)
- Toppings as desired (lettuce, tomatoes, onions)
- Olive oil for brushing buns
Instructions
- Prep the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts on a cutting board and lightly cover with plastic wrap. Use the flat side of a meat mallet to pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness of about ½ inch to ensure even cooking.
- Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl or freezer bag, combine the vegetable oil, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Add the chicken breasts and toss until well coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours for maximum flavor.
- Preheat the Grill: Heat your grill to medium-high heat, approximately 375°F, to prepare for cooking the chicken and toasting the buns.
- Grill the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting any excess drip off, and discard the marinade. Place the chicken breasts on the grill and cook for 5 to 6 minutes per side, or until the chicken is no longer pink and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption.
- Toast the Buns: While the chicken is grilling, brush the cut sides of the hamburger buns with olive oil. Place them face down on the grill and toast until lightly browned and crisp.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Spread honey mustard sauce on the toasted buns. Layer with desired toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. Place the grilled chicken breasts on top, then cover with the bun tops. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Notes
- For extra flavor, marinate the chicken overnight if time allows.
- Use brioche rolls for a richer sandwich experience.
- Alternative toppings can include pickles, avocado, or cheese.
- Ensure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F to guarantee it is fully cooked.
