Description
Delicious and easy-to-make fried apples cooked in butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. These tender, syrupy apples make a perfect warm side dish or dessert topping, ideal for cozy gatherings or simple homemade treats.
Ingredients
Ingredients
- ½ cup butter (1 stick, $0.99)
- 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into medium wedges (5 cups cut, 1060g uncut, $3.83)
- ½ cup granulated sugar (110g, $0.21)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon ($0.09)
- ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg ($0.01)
- ⅛ tsp salt ($0.01)
Instructions
- Gather and prepare ingredients. Collect all the necessary ingredients as listed to ensure a smooth cooking process and no last-minute runs to the store.
- Melt the butter. Place ½ cup of butter in a cast-iron or medium skillet over low heat and allow it to melt gently without browning.
- Prep the apples. While the butter melts, peel the Granny Smith apples and cut them into medium-sized wedges for even cooking.
- Cook apples initially. Add the apple wedges to the melted butter, cover the skillet with a lid or foil, and cook on low heat for 15 minutes to soften the apples slowly.
- Add sugar and spices. Remove the lid and sprinkle ½ cup of granulated sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, ⅛ tsp nutmeg, and ⅛ tsp salt evenly over the apples, then stir gently to coat all the pieces.
- Final cook to syrupy finish. Spread the apples out evenly in the skillet and continue cooking on low heat for another 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples become tender and the mixture turns syrupy.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart balance, but other firm apples can work as well.
- If a skillet lid is not available, aluminum foil can be used to cover the pan during cooking.
- Ensure low heat is maintained to prevent butter from burning and apples from sticking.
- Stir occasionally after adding sugar and spices to prevent burning and to promote even cooking.
- Serve warm as a side dish, dessert topping, or with pancakes for added flavor.
