Description
A delightful egg-free French Toast recipe that uses a creamy milk and cornstarch mixture with cinnamon and vanilla for rich flavor. Perfect for those avoiding eggs, it cooks up crispy on the griddle and serves beautifully with maple syrup and butter.
Ingredients
Milk Mixture
- 1½ cups whole milk (preferred)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, divided
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Main
- 4 tablespoons butter (for the griddle, divided)
- 8 slices bread
- Maple syrup, for serving
- Butter, for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the milk mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the whole milk, cornstarch, half of the cinnamon (½ teaspoon), and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
- Heat the griddle: Place ½ tablespoon of butter on a griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat to melt and coat the surface.
- Dip the bread: Coat both sides of 4 slices of bread into the milk mixture, ensuring they absorb enough without becoming too soggy.
- Cook the bread: Place the coated bread slices on the griddle, cooking for 7-8 minutes on the first side until golden brown and set. Flip and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes on the other side. Add the remaining ½ teaspoon of cinnamon to the milk mixture before starting the second batch.
- Repeat for remaining slices: Clean the griddle if needed, add a little more butter, then repeat dipping and cooking steps for the remaining 4 slices of bread.
- Serve: Serve the French toast hot with additional butter and warm maple syrup. Optionally, top with fresh berries for added flavor.
Notes
- Use sturdy bread like brioche or Texas toast for best results.
- Adjust cooking temperature to avoid burning the milk mixture on the griddle.
- You can substitute whole milk with any plant-based milk, but the texture may slightly differ.
- Adding fresh berries or powdered sugar as toppings enhances the flavor and presentation.
- Make sure to whisk the milk mixture well to prevent lumps of cornstarch.
