Description
These French Dip Sandwiches are juicy, cheesy, and tender, featuring melt-in-your-mouth roast beef. Perfect for a comforting meal, you can prepare them using an Instant Pot or slow cooker for convenience and rich flavor.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 Pound Chuck Roast
- 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Pepper
- 1 Teaspoon Salt
- 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
- 1 Large Onion, sliced
- 1 (10.5 Ounce) Can French Onion Soup
- 2 Cups Beef Broth
- 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
- 6 Hoagie Rolls
- 6 Slices Provolone Cheese
Instructions
- Season the roast: Rub the chuck roast evenly with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to infuse the meat with flavor.
- Sear the roast: Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Sear the roast on all sides until browned to lock in the juices, then transfer it to a plate.
- Sauté onions: In the same pan, add sliced onions and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Prepare in crockpot/slow cooker: Place the roast and sautéed onions in the crockpot. Pour in beef broth, French onion soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook on low for 6-8 hours until the meat is tender and easy to shred.
- Prepare in Instant Pot (optional): Using the Instant Pot’s sauté function, after searing and sautéing onions, add the broth, soup, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook on high pressure/manual for 60 minutes, then allow a natural pressure release for 20 minutes before quick releasing.
- Slice or shred meat: Remove the cooked roast from your choice of cooker and slice or shred it based on your preference.
- Strain and serve au jus: Strain the cooking liquid through a fine strainer to remove solids, collecting the flavorful jus for dipping.
- Assemble sandwiches: Layer the meat and a slice of provolone cheese inside hoagie rolls. Toast if desired to melt the cheese and crisp the bread.
- Serve: Serve the sandwiches hot with a side of the warm au jus for dipping to complete the classic French Dip experience.
Notes
- For the best flavor, allow roast to rest before slicing.
- To melt the cheese perfectly, toast assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 1-2 minutes.
- Using a natural release in the Instant Pot helps keep the meat tender and juicy.
- You can substitute beef broth with homemade stock for richer taste.
- Leftover au jus can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
