Description
This eggless French toast recipe offers a delicious, dairy-rich alternative to traditional French toast. Using a simple mixture of milk and cornstarch to create a custard-like dip for the bread, it is easy to prepare in just 20 minutes and perfect for those allergic to eggs or seeking a plant-based option. The thick slices of bread soak up the mixture and are cooked to golden perfection in butter, served with fresh strawberries and maple syrup for a classic breakfast treat.
Ingredients
Wet Mixture
- 1/2 cup milk (your favorite)
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
Bread and Cooking
- 2 slices bread (thicker is better)
- 2 tablespoons butter or spray (for grilling)
For Serving
- 1/2 cup sliced strawberries
- Maple syrup
Instructions
- Make the wet mixture: In a shallow dish with sides, combine the milk, cornstarch, vanilla extract, and cinnamon if using. Whisk thoroughly until the cornstarch dissolves completely and the mixture is smooth.
- Soak the bread: Place one slice of bread into the milk mixture, allowing it to soak for a few seconds on one side. Then flip and soak the other side for 3 seconds to ensure the bread absorbs the mixture evenly without becoming too soggy.
- Heat the pan: Preheat a large nonstick pan over medium heat to prepare for cooking the French toast.
- Cook the first side: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the pan, then place the soaked slices of bread into the pan. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes or until the underside is golden brown and crispy.
- Flip and cook the other side: Using a spatula, carefully flip each slice and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes until the second side is also golden brown and cooked through. Remove cooked slices from the pan and repeat with remaining bread and butter.
- Serve and enjoy: Top the French toast with sliced strawberries and drizzle with maple syrup or your favorite toppings to serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Use thicker slices of bread such as brioche or Texas toast for best absorption and texture.
- Adjust soaking time carefully to avoid overly soggy toast that may fall apart during cooking.
- Butter can be substituted with oil or non-stick spray for a lighter version.
- This recipe excludes eggs, making it suitable for those allergic or avoiding eggs.
- Feel free to add other fruit toppings like blueberries or bananas as preferred.
- To keep cooked French toast warm, place on a baking sheet in a 200°F oven while finishing the rest.
