Ingredients
Ingredients
- 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter
- 8 cups mini marshmallows, divided (7 cups + 1 cup reserved)
- 1 oz bag freeze dried strawberries, pulsed to a fine powder in a food processor
- 6 cups rice krispie cereal
Instructions
- Prepare the pan: Lightly grease a large cookie sheet with shortening to prevent sticking and set aside.
- Melt butter and marshmallows: In a large pot over medium heat, melt the 6 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add 7 cups of the mini marshmallows and stir continuously with a rubber spatula until the marshmallows have completely melted, about 1 minute.
- Add strawberry powder: Stir in the freeze dried strawberry powder into the melted marshmallow mixture until evenly combined and smooth.
- Combine cereal and marshmallow mixture: Turn off the heat, add the 6 cups of rice krispie cereal, and stir well until all the cereal is coated with the strawberry marshmallow mixture. Then toss in the reserved 1 cup of mini marshmallows and gently stir to combine; these marshmallows won’t fully melt and will create little pockets of white throughout.
- Spread and flatten: Immediately transfer the mixture onto the prepared cookie sheet. Using clean hands lightly greased with shortening, press and flatten the mixture evenly to a uniform thickness.
- Cool: Allow the rice krispie treats to cool and firm up for 10-15 minutes at room temperature.
- Cut hearts: Carefully flip the firmed sheet onto a piece of parchment paper. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts as close to each other as possible. The number of hearts depends on the size of your cutter.
- Serve and store: Enjoy immediately or store the treats in a large gallon Ziploc bag to keep them fresh and soft for several days.
Notes
- Using shortening on your hands when pressing the mixture helps prevent sticking.
- The reserved marshmallows added last will create fun white pockets that add to the visual appeal and texture.
- To make cleanup easier, soak the pot in warm water immediately after use.
- Freeze dried strawberry powder can be made by pulsing freeze dried strawberries in a food processor until fine.
- The yield of 24 hearts depends on the size of your cookie cutter — smaller cutters will yield more treats.
- For softer treats, store in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag at room temperature.
