Description
This easy homemade hummus recipe is quick and simple to prepare, delivering smooth and creamy hummus that tastes far better than store-bought versions. Made with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice, it’s perfect for serving as a dip with vegetables, crackers, or toasted pita bread.
Ingredients
Hummus Ingredients
- 1/2 cup tahini (roasted, not raw)
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (plus more for garnishing)
- 2 garlic cloves, mashed and roughly chopped
- 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained
- 1/4 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Garnishes
- A sprinkling of paprika
- A swirl of olive oil
- Toasted pine nuts
- Chopped parsley
Instructions
- Process the tahini and olive oil: In a food processor, combine the tahini and olive oil and pulse until smooth. This helps create a creamy base for your hummus.
- Add the garlic, beans, lemon juice, water, and salt: Add the mashed garlic, drained chickpeas, freshly squeezed lemon juice, water, and kosher salt to the food processor. Process the mixture until smooth, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides. The longer you process, the smoother the hummus will become. Adjust salt or lemon juice to taste.
- Serve: Spoon the hummus into a serving dish. Drizzle a bit of olive oil on top and sprinkle with your choice of garnishes such as paprika, toasted pine nuts, or chopped fresh parsley for extra flavor and presentation.
- Optional – Toast pita bread: If serving with pita triangles, cut pita bread into triangles, brush each with olive oil, and toast in a 375°F (190°C) oven for about 10 minutes, turning halfway through until golden and crispy.
- Storage: Store any leftover hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
Notes
- For smoother hummus, peel the chickpeas before blending, though it is optional.
- You can adjust the water quantity to reach your preferred hummus consistency.
- Add spices like cumin or roasted red pepper for variations.
- Use fresh lemon juice for best flavor; bottled lemon juice may alter the taste.
- Hummus pairs well with raw vegetables, crackers, pita chips, or as a sandwich spread.
