Description

This easy French Toast recipe offers a perfectly golden, custardy breakfast treat made with rich eggs, whole milk, warm honey, and fragrant cinnamon. Using thick slices of bread like Challah or Brioche, the toasts are soaked in a flavorful egg custard, sautéed until crisp on the outside, and finished in a low oven to set the center. Simple yet indulgent, this dish serves as a delightful morning favorite that pairs beautifully with your choice of toppings.

Ingredients

Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp warm honey

Bread and Cooking

  • 1 lb bread such as Challah, Brioche, or Texas Toast (about 8-10 slices, 3/4” thick)
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter (for sautéing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice your bread about 3/4″ thick and arrange the slices on a wire rack for 1-2 hours if you have time, to dry out the bread slightly which helps it absorb the custard without becoming too soggy. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 275˚F to keep the toasts warm later.
  2. Make the Custard: In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg yolks, whole milk, salt, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and warm honey until fully blended and the honey is dissolved. Pour this custard mixture into a shallow casserole dish that fits about 4 pieces of bread at a time or a size suitable for your skillet.
  3. Heat the Skillet: Place your skillet on medium-low heat and melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. This gentle heat will allow the bread to cook through without burning the exterior.
  4. Soak and Sauté the Bread: Dip 4 pieces of bread into the egg custard mixture, soaking each side for 30-40 seconds depending on thickness to ensure the bread absorbs enough custard. Remove and let excess drip back into the dish. Place soaked bread slices into the hot skillet and sauté each side for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Keep Warm and Finish Cooking: Transfer the cooked toasts onto a baking sheet and place them in the preheated 275˚F oven to keep warm. Repeat the soaking and sautéing process with the remaining bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed. Once all slices are cooked, place them all in the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes to fully set the custard center, then serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Drying out the bread helps it soak up more custard without falling apart.
  • Use thick, sturdy bread like Challah or Brioche for best texture.
  • If you prefer, you can substitute whole milk with 2% milk, but the custard will be richer with whole milk.
  • Adjust soaking time based on bread thickness to avoid sogginess.
  • Butter quantity can be increased slightly if needed to prevent sticking during sautéing.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in the oven to maintain texture and heat without overcooking.
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes (plus optional 1-2 hours drying time)
  • Cook Time: 15 minutes sautéing + 15 minutes in oven
