Ingredients
Cherry Milk Base
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen pitted cherries
- 2 cups creamy non-dairy milk
- 2 tablespoons grade A maple syrup (plus more to taste)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- Optional: 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (for chocolate cherry oats)
Oats Mixture
- 2 cups quick-cooking or rolled oats
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds (or substitute with ground flaxseed)
- 1 cup pitted cherries, roughly chopped (optional)
Toppings
- Nut butter (hemp hearts, almonds, etc.)
Instructions
- Make the Cherry “Milk”: Add the cherries to a high-speed blender along with the non-dairy milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, almond extract if using, and a pinch of salt. Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds until the cherries are fully pureed and combined into a smooth, flavored milk base.
- Mix: In a large bowl, combine the oats and chia seeds. Pour the cherry milk over the oat mixture, then add the roughly chopped cherries if using. Stir thoroughly to combine all the ingredients evenly. Let the mixture sit for at least 5 minutes at room temperature to allow the oats and chia seeds to begin absorbing the liquid, then stir again to submerge any oats that may have absorbed liquid and risen to the top.
- Store & Serve: Transfer the oat mixture into jars or containers with lids and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight, to fully hydrate and thicken. Serve cold or warm it up if preferred. Add your choice of toppings such as nut butter or seeds just before serving. Leftovers keep fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Notes
- You can use either quick-cooking or rolled oats based on your texture preference; rolled oats provide more chew.
- For a chocolate twist, add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to the cherry milk mix before blending.
- Maple syrup can be adjusted to taste or substituted with other liquid sweeteners like agave or honey if not vegan.
- This recipe is naturally vegan and gluten-free if using certified gluten-free oats.
- Chia seeds can be substituted with ground flaxseed if preferred.
- Serve cold directly from the fridge or warm gently on the stove or microwave if you prefer a hot breakfast.
