Description
This Dutch Oven Apple Cider Brisket is a tender, flavorful slow-cooked beef brisket infused with a tangy apple cider marinade and aromatic spices. The brisket is first seared to lock in juices, then slow-cooked with softened onions and apple slices in the oven until meltingly tender. Perfect for a comforting, hearty meal that showcases the balance of sweet and savory flavors.
Ingredients
Beef and Seasoning
- 1 3-pound beef brisket
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 tablespoons olive oil (divided)
Vegetables and Fruits
- 2 medium-large onions (sliced)
- 1 apple (sliced)
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
Marinade
- 1 cup apple cider
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon fennel seeds
- ½ teaspoon fresh or dried rosemary
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 250 degrees F (121 degrees C) to prepare for slow cooking the brisket.
- Make Marinade: In a medium bowl, combine minced garlic, apple cider, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, fennel seeds, cayenne pepper, and rosemary; mix well to create the flavorful marinade.
- Cook Apples and Onions: Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to your Dutch oven and cook the sliced apples and onions on low heat until they become very soft and translucent, roughly 6 minutes. Remove and set aside in a bowl.
- Sear Brisket: Add the remaining olive oil to the Dutch oven and sear the brisket on medium heat for 4-6 minutes on each side to develop a browned crust. Position the brisket fat side up inside the Dutch oven. Then turn off the heat.
- Add Apples and Onions: Place the softened apple and onion mixture over the seared brisket in the Dutch oven.
- Add Marinade: Pour the prepared marinade over the brisket, apples, and onions evenly.
- Slow Cook: Cover the Dutch oven with its lid and place it in the preheated oven. Cook for 5 to 8 hours until the brisket becomes very soft and tender.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the brisket from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to retain its juices.
Notes
- Cooking time can range between 5 to 8 hours depending on brisket thickness and desired tenderness.
- Use fresh rosemary if available for a more vibrant herbal flavor.
- Make sure to sear the brisket well to develop deep flavors.
- Resting the meat after cooking allows juices to redistribute and enhances tenderness.
- If you prefer a less spicy dish, reduce or omit the cayenne pepper.
