Description
Crispy and golden Air Fryer Onion Rings made with a seasoned batter and Italian seasoned Panko breadcrumbs, perfect as a delicious snack or side dish with less oil than traditional frying.
Ingredients
Onion
- 1 large yellow onion (Vidalia is best)
Batter
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Coating
- 2 cups Panko breadcrumbs (Italian seasoned)
Instructions
- Prepare the onion rings: Peel the onion and cut off the top and bottom stems. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice the onion into rings. Gently separate the individual rings and set aside.
- Make the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, milk, egg, seasoning salt, paprika, and garlic powder until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk to thin or flour to thicken until the batter coats the onion rings well, similar to pancake batter texture.
- Dip onion rings in batter: Take each onion ring one at a time and dip it into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Shake off any excess batter to avoid clumping.
- Coat with breadcrumbs: Immediately dip the battered onion ring into the Italian seasoned Panko breadcrumbs, covering completely. Set the coated rings aside until ready to air fry.
- Arrange in air fryer: Place the onion rings in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Spray each layer generously with cooking spray or your preferred oil spray. If necessary, work in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Air fry: Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 8-9 minutes or until the onion rings turn golden brown and crispy. There is no need to flip during cooking, but check your air fryer after a few minutes and adjust time if needed since models vary.
- Serve: Carefully remove the onion rings from the air fryer and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
- Use Vidalia onions for a sweeter taste and ideal texture.
- Adjust batter thickness as needed to ensure proper coating but avoid dripping.
- If you don’t have Italian seasoned Panko, plain Panko with added Italian seasoning works well.
- Spraying with oil ensures crisp and golden results without deep frying.
- Cook in batches to avoid overcrowding and soggy rings.
- Check your air fryer’s cooking times as they may differ slightly.
