Description
A classic, silky smooth Italian dessert made with creamy gelatin, sweetened with sugar and infused with vanilla. This Panna Cotta recipe is simple to prepare in under 20 minutes and requires just a few ingredients, making it an elegant treat perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Gelatin Mixture
- 2-1/2 teaspoons unflavored gelatin
- 1/4 cup 2% milk
Cream Mixture
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Bloom Gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin evenly over the 2% milk and allow it to sit for 5 minutes so the gelatin softens and blooms.
- Heat Cream and Sugar: While the gelatin is blooming, combine the heavy whipping cream and sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
- Dissolve Gelatin: Add the gelatin and milk mixture to the hot cream mixture along with the vanilla extract, stirring continuously until the gelatin has completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
- Pour and Chill: Evenly divide the mixture into four dessert dishes or ramekins. Cover them with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until the Panna Cotta is fully set and firm to the touch.
Notes
- Ensure the cream mixture is hot enough to fully dissolve the gelatin but do not let it boil.
- For added flavor, top with fresh berries, fruit compote, or a drizzle of caramel before serving.
- If you prefer a lighter dessert, you can substitute half the heavy cream with whole milk, but note the texture will be less rich.
- To unmold the Panna Cotta, briefly dip the dessert dishes in warm water and invert onto a plate.
