Description
This creamy herb sauce is a simple and versatile condiment perfect for enhancing a variety of dishes. Made with a buttery roux base, milk, fresh or dried herbs, and tangy lemon juice, it delivers a smooth, flavorful experience that’s easy to prepare in just minutes.
Ingredients
Butter Roux
- ½ stick butter (salted or unsalted)
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
Liquid and Flavorings
- 1 cup milk (2% or whole)
- 1 tablespoon dried herbs (such as thyme, parsley, or tarragon)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed recommended)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Melt the Butter: Place a saucepan over low heat and melt the butter completely to ensure an even base for your sauce.
- Add the Flour: Once the butter is melted, sprinkle in the all-purpose flour gradually while whisking continuously to create a smooth roux without lumps.
- Incorporate the Milk: Slowly pour in the milk in ¼ cup increments, whisking constantly to combine the mixture into a creamy, smooth sauce. Once fully combined, remove the pan from heat.
- Mix in Herbs: Add the dried herbs of your choice to the sauce, stirring to distribute their flavor evenly throughout.
- Add Lemon Juice and Season: Stir in the lemon juice to add brightness, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix well before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute dried herbs with fresh herbs for a brighter flavor; reduce quantity to 1 teaspoon.
- For a thicker sauce, cook the roux a bit longer before adding milk.
- This sauce pairs wonderfully with chicken, fish, vegetables, or pasta.
- If you prefer a dairy-free version, use a plant-based milk alternative and a suitable butter substitute.
