Ingredients
Bread Base
- 1 loaf French bread
- 1 tablespoon butter
Vegetables
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 stalk celery, chopped
- 1 medium bell pepper, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
Main Filling
- 1 pound cooked crawfish tails, roughly chopped
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Creole mustard (or spicy brown mustard)
- ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (or other melty cheese)
For Garnish
- Chopped fresh parsley
- Red chili flakes or paprika
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the crawfish bread.
- Prepare Bread: Slice the French bread loaf lengthwise in half. If desired, scoop out some of the interior bread to create space for the filling. Place the bread halves on a baking sheet.
- Sauté Vegetables: Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and bell pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables soften.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute to release its aroma.
- Add Crawfish and Seasoning: Mix in the cooked crawfish tails and Cajun seasoning. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to combine flavors.
- Incorporate Cream Cheese: Add the softened cream cheese to the pan and stir continually until it melts completely and blends evenly with the other ingredients, about 2 minutes.
- Combine Filling Ingredients: Transfer the cooked mixture into a mixing bowl. Stir in the mayonnaise, Creole mustard, shredded Parmesan, and cheddar cheese until well combined to create a creamy filling.
- Fill Bread: Spread the creamy crawfish mixture evenly over the prepared French bread halves.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven at 350°F for 12 minutes to heat through and meld flavors.
- Broil for Finish: Increase the oven setting to broil and place the bread under the broiler. Broil for a few minutes until the bread becomes toasty and the topping bubbles and turns golden brown. Watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and sprinkle with red chili flakes or paprika before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use freshly cooked or thawed crawfish tails for best flavor.
- You can substitute other melty cheeses like mozzarella or Monterey Jack if preferred.
- Adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning to control the spiciness level.
- Broil carefully as the topping can brown quickly.
- This dish pairs well with a crisp green salad or a cold beverage.
