Description
This classic Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes recipe features tender layers of thinly sliced russet potatoes baked in a rich mixture of heavy cream and aromatic spices, then topped with melted Gruyere and mozzarella cheeses for a creamy, flavorful side dish that’s perfect for family dinners and holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
Potatoes and Cream Mixture
- 2 lbs. Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8-inch thick
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 3/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
Cheese
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking and set it aside while you prepare the ingredients.
- Mix Potatoes and Cream: In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced potatoes with heavy whipping cream, garlic powder, kosher salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Mix the ingredients well using a large wooden spoon until the potatoes are evenly coated with the cream and spices.
- Layer the Potatoes and Cheese: Pour half of the potato mixture into the prepared baking dish and press down gently to create an even layer. Sprinkle half of the shredded Gruyere cheese and half of the shredded mozzarella over the potatoes. Repeat this layering with the remaining potatoes and cheeses to build a second layer.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil to lock in moisture. Place it on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 45 minutes to allow the potatoes to cook through and the flavors to meld.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are completely tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Rest Before Serving: Let the scalloped potatoes rest for about 10 minutes after baking. This allows the dish to set slightly, making it easier to serve and enhancing the flavors.
Notes
- Use a mandoline slicer for uniform 1/8-inch thick potato slices to ensure even cooking.
- Gruyere cheese adds a nutty flavor which pairs well with mozzarella’s mild creaminess; feel free to substitute with similar cheeses if unavailable.
- Covering the dish during the first baking stage helps cook the potatoes evenly and prevents drying out.
- Letting the dish rest before serving helps it firm up for cleaner slices.
- If you prefer a crustier top, broil uncovered for 2-3 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning.
