Delicious and crispy Cheesy Parmesan Potato Balls made with creamy mashed potatoes, Parmesan, and a gooey mozzarella center. These golden bites are coated in breadcrumbs and fried to perfection, making a perfect appetizer or snack for any occasion.
Ingredients
Potato Mixture
- 800 grams cooked potatoes (about 5–6 medium potatoes or 5 cups mashed)
- 70 grams Parmesan cheese (about ¾ cup grated)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
Filling
- 50 grams mozzarella cheese (about ½ cup cubed)
Coating
- 1 egg, beaten
- 5 tablespoons cornstarch
- Breadcrumbs (quantity as needed for coating)
For Frying and Garnish
- Sunflower oil (enough to fill pan halfway)
- Freshly chopped parsley (for garnish)
- Extra Parmesan cheese (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare Potatoes: Peel, wash, and cut the cooked potatoes into even pieces. Mash them thoroughly with Parmesan cheese, butter, garlic powder, and salt until they become smooth and creamy.
- Shape Balls: Using a cookie or ice cream scoop, portion the mashed potato mixture. Place a cube of mozzarella cheese in the center of each portion, then cover the cheese with more mashed potato and shape it into a smooth, round ball.
- Coat Balls: Roll each potato ball first in cornstarch, then dip it into the beaten egg, making sure it’s fully coated, and finally roll it evenly in breadcrumbs until completely covered.
- Optional Freezing: To help the balls hold their shape while frying, you can freeze the coated balls for a few minutes before cooking.
- Fry Balls: Heat sunflower oil in a pan, filling it halfway. Fry the potato balls in batches over medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy on all sides, approximately 3-4 minutes per batch.
- Drain Excess Oil: Remove the fried balls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle the hot potato balls with freshly chopped parsley and extra Parmesan cheese before serving for added flavor and presentation.
Notes
- Freezing the coated balls is optional but helps maintain shape during frying.
- Use a neutral oil like sunflower oil for frying to get a clean taste.
- You can substitute mozzarella with other melting cheeses if preferred.
- Ensure oil temperature is medium heat to avoid burning the breadcrumbs.
- Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
