Ingredients
Chai Spice Mix
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
Fruit Mixture
- 6 pears, peeled and chopped
- ½ cup granulated white sugar
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Half of the chai spice mix (from above)
Crisp Topping
- ½ cup all purpose flour
- ½ cup old fashioned oats
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- Remaining half of the chai spice mix (from above)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
Serving
- Vanilla ice cream (for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Chai Spice: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a small bowl, thoroughly mix together ground ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and allspice to create your chai spice blend.
- Prepare Pear Mixture: In a large bowl, place the peeled and chopped pears. Sprinkle the pears with granulated sugar, kosher salt, and half of the chai spice mix. Stir gently to combine and let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Then add vanilla extract and stir again.
- Make Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, old fashioned oats, brown sugar, kosher salt, and remaining chai spice. Pour in the melted butter and mix until the mixture becomes evenly moistened and crumbly.
- Assemble the Crisp: Transfer the pear mixture to a 9-inch pie plate or similar baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the oat topping over the pears, covering them completely.
- Bake: Bake the assembled crisp in the preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crunchy. Watch carefully towards the end to prevent burning; if the topping darkens too much, tent with foil for the remaining baking time.
- Serve: Remove the crisp from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve warm topped with scoops of vanilla ice cream for a perfect finishing touch.
Notes
- For best results, choose ripe but firm pears such as Bosc or Anjou, which hold their shape during baking.
- You can prepare the chai spice blend in advance and store it for use in other recipes.
- Adjust sugar quantities depending on the sweetness of your pears and personal preference.
- If you prefer a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
- The crisp topping can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator before baking.
