Description
This classic Buttermilk French Toast recipe offers a rich and creamy twist on traditional French toast. Made with hearty slices of French bread soaked in a velvety buttermilk and egg mixture, then cooked to golden perfection on a griddle, this recipe makes for a deliciously satisfying breakfast or brunch for the whole family.
Ingredients
Wet Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 5 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Dry Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
Others
- 10 slices hearty French bread or brioche (3/4-inch thick)
- Butter for griddle
Instructions
- Prepare the batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined and smooth, even if it initially seems curdled.
- Preheat the griddle: Heat a non-stick or cast iron griddle over medium-low heat, or an electric griddle over medium-high heat until hot for cooking.
- Soak bread slices: Dip each slice of bread one at a time into the buttermilk mixture, coating both sides thoroughly for about 20 seconds or until just soaked.
- Cook the French toast: Butter the griddle in the spot where you will place the bread. Place the soaked bread onto the griddle and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip the bread slice, butter the griddle again if needed, and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Keep warm and serve: If cooking in batches, keep the cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven. Serve with butter and your choice of syrup such as maple, blueberry, buttermilk, or strawberry syrup, and optionally whipped cream.
Notes
- Use thick slices of sturdy bread like French bread or brioche to hold up well when soaked.
- If your griddle heats unevenly, move slices around to avoid burning.
- You can adjust soak time depending on your bread type and thickness.
- Keep an eye on the cooking temperature to prevent burning while ensuring the toast cooks through.
- For extra flavor, sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg into the batter.
