Ideal as a healthy dessert or snack for those seeking a vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free treat.
Ingredients
Hummus Base
- 1 15 ounce can chickpeas or black beans, drained and rinsed
Flavorings
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar (or more to taste)
- 1/3 cup runny almond butter (or other nut/seed butter)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Optional Adjustments
- 1-2 tablespoons non-dairy milk (or more as needed to blend/thin)
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips (optional, to fold in)
Instructions
- Drain Beans: Thoroughly drain and rinse the chickpeas or black beans to remove the canning liquid and reduce any strong bean flavor.
- Add to Food Processor: Place the rinsed beans into a food processor or high-speed blender to prepare for blending.
- Add Ingredients: Add the cocoa powder, maple syrup, coconut sugar, almond butter, vanilla extract, and salt to the beans in the food processor, leaving out the non-dairy milk for now.
- Blend: Blend the mixture until completely smooth, which should take about 1 to 2 minutes depending on the appliance. If the batter is too thick, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of non-dairy milk gradually to reach the desired creamy consistency.
- Taste and Adjust: Sample the hummus and adjust sweetness or flavors as desired. If the batter feels warm from blending, transfer it to a container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to cool and allow the flavors to meld.
- Serve: Serve chilled with your favorite dippers such as strawberries, apple slices, pretzels, or graham crackers. For added texture and flavor, fold in about 1/4 cup of chocolate chips before serving if desired.
Notes
- This recipe is vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free, making it suitable for various dietary preferences.
- Using black beans instead of chickpeas will alter the flavor slightly but still produce a delicious hummus.
- Adjust the sweetness according to your taste by adding more coconut sugar or maple syrup if desired.
- Allowing the hummus to chill enhances the flavor and provides a better texture.
- Optional mix-ins like chocolate chips add a delightful crunch and extra chocolate hit.
