Description

This Blackened Halibut with Mango and Avocado Salsa recipe combines bold, smoky spices with a fresh, sweet, and tangy salsa for a flavorful and healthy seafood dish. Perfectly seared halibut fillets are blackened in a cast-iron skillet before a brief finish in the oven, then served alongside a vibrant salsa made with ripe mango, creamy avocado, and zesty lime juice. A quick and easy dinner that delivers restaurant-quality results at home.

Ingredients

Blackening Mix

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon granulated onion
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Salsa

  • 1 large mango (peeled, pitted and diced)
  • 1 small avocado (peeled, pitted and diced)
  • 1/2 medium jalapeno pepper (seeded if desired, finely chopped)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 1 large lime (juiced)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Fish

  • 2 pieces (6-8 ounce each) halibut fillets (skin removed)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Make the Blackening Mix: In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, sweet paprika, granulated garlic, granulated onion, black pepper, cayenne pepper, dry mustard, dried thyme, dried oregano, and salt. Mix well and set aside.
  2. Prepare the Salsa: In a medium bowl, combine the diced mango, avocado, finely chopped jalapeno, red bell pepper, red onion, and chopped cilantro. Add the lime juice and honey, then season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Stir gently to combine and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Season the Fish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Pat the halibut fillets dry with paper towels. Liberally season both sides of the fish with the prepared blackening mix.
  4. Sear the Fish: Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until very hot. Add butter and olive oil to the skillet. Once the butter is melted and hot, carefully place the halibut fillets in the skillet. Cook for 2 minutes on each side to create a blackened crust.
  5. Finish Cooking in Oven: Transfer the skillet with the halibut to the preheated oven. Bake the fish for 4 to 5 minutes or until it flakes easily with a fork and is cooked through.
  6. Serve: Remove the fish from the oven and transfer to plates. Serve immediately with the prepared mango and avocado salsa on the side.

Notes

  • For extra heat, leave the seeds in the jalapeno pepper in the salsa.
  • Use a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet for best blackening results to prevent sticking.
  • If you don’t have fresh mango, frozen diced mango can be used but thaw first.
  • Adjust honey in the salsa to balance sweetness according to the mango’s ripeness.
  • The dish pairs well with steamed rice or a light green salad for a complete meal.
