Description

This Best Cheesy Garlic Bread recipe combines the rich flavors of roasted garlic, buttery custard, and gooey melted mozzarella cheese on soft King’s Hawaiian rolls or a French baguette. Perfectly baked to achieve a crispy golden crust with a gooey cheesy topping, this crowd-pleasing side makes an irresistible appetizer or snack that’s easy to prepare and loved by all ages.

Ingredients

Roasted Garlic

  • 8-10 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

Garlic Butter Custard

  • ½ cup butter, melted (113g)
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk (60g)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Bread and Topping

  • 12 King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls, kept in the full sheet form (or replace with a French baguette of similar size)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish
  • Chili flakes, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Roast the Garlic: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Combine peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Place them in a mini oven-safe pot with a lid or cover tightly with foil. Bake for about 20 minutes until the garlic is soft and golden, then mash with a fork and set aside.
  2. Prepare Garlic Butter Custard: In a bowl, whisk together the mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped fresh parsley until thoroughly combined to create a flavorful custard.
  3. Pre-bake the Bread: Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (177°C). Using a sharp knife, carefully slice the full sheet of Hawaiian rolls (or baguette) into two halves. Place these halves on a large baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes until they turn light golden and slightly crispy.
  4. Coat the Bread with Custard: Pour the garlic butter custard into a wide pan. Carefully dip the pre-baked bread halves into the custard, making sure each side is well coated and soaked with the garlic butter mixture.
  5. Bake with Custard: Return the butter-coated bread to the baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 15-18 minutes until the bread is golden and cooked through.
  6. Add Cheese and Broil: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the baked bread. Switch the oven setting to broil/grill and broil for about 5 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and golden brown on top.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with additional chopped fresh parsley and chili flakes to taste. Slice the cheesy garlic bread and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic for roasting to maximize flavor and sweetness in the garlic butter custard.
  • King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian rolls add a subtle sweetness that complements the savory garlic and cheese. A French baguette can be used for a crunchier texture.
  • Ensure the bread is pre-baked lightly before dipping in the custard to prevent sogginess.
  • Broiling the cheese at the end creates a perfect golden, bubbly topping—watch closely to avoid burning.
  • Adjust chili flakes quantity to your heat preference or omit for a milder taste.
  • This bread is best enjoyed fresh out of the oven but can be reheated with foil in an oven to maintain softness.
