This family-favorite recipe is perfect for a satisfying brunch or breakfast, offering a delicious combination of textures and flavors baked to perfection in a deep casserole dish.
Ingredients
Potatoes
- 1 (2 pound) package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound sausage
- 1 small onion, diced
Egg Mixture
- 5 large eggs
- ½ cup milk
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Cheese
- 12 ounces shredded Cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Gather Ingredients: Collect all the required ingredients to have everything ready before starting.
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a deep-sided 8×8-inch square baking dish to prevent sticking, then evenly layer the thawed hash brown potatoes in the dish.
- Cook Sausage and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage and diced onion together, stirring and crumbling the sausage, until browned and fully cooked, about 10 minutes. Drain excess fat from the mixture.
- Mix Egg Mixture: While the sausage cooks, whisk together eggs, milk, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl until the mixture is smooth and combined.
- Assemble Casserole: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the hash browns in the baking dish. Sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese on top of the egg layer. Add the cooked sausage and onion mixture evenly over the cheese, then sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.
- Bake Covered: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake covered for 1 hour, allowing the eggs to set and the flavors to meld.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10 minutes or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating the casserole is fully cooked.
- Rest and Serve: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after removing from the oven to set before slicing and serving.
Notes
- If your baking dish is shallower than 3 inches, use a larger 9×13-inch pan; a thinner casserole may require less baking time—start checking doneness after 50 to 55 minutes.
- You can substitute the maple-flavored sausage with any preferred type of sausage.
- Ensure the baking dish is deep enough to accommodate the casserole and cover with foil without touching the surface.
