Description

Baked Apple Roses with Puff Pastry is a visually stunning and delicious dessert that combines thinly sliced apples softening in lemon water, sweet apricot preserves, and flaky puff pastry baked to golden perfection. These elegant rose-shaped pastries make for a perfect treat to impress guests or enjoy a delightful homemade dessert.

Ingredients

Fruits

  • 2 medium apples

Pastry

  • 1 puff pastry sheet

Preserve Mixture

  • 3 tbsp apricot preserve
  • 2 tbsp water

Other

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Cinnamon, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples: Cut the apples in half and remove the cores. Lay each half flat and slice into thin pieces using a sharp knife to achieve thin apple slices that will be easy to roll.
  2. Softening the apples: Place the apple slices into a microwave-safe bowl, add enough water to just immerse the slices, and add the lemon juice. Stir gently to combine. Microwave on high for 3 to 4 minutes until the apples become soft but still pliable, adjusting time slightly based on slice thickness.
  3. Thaw puff pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheet as per the package instructions, then roll it out to an approximate length of 18 inches to prepare for slicing.
  4. Cut pastry strips: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to slice the puff pastry into 6 equal strips to form the base for each rose.
  5. Mix preserve glaze: Combine the apricot preserve with 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl to create a smooth glaze to brush over the pastry.
  6. Apply glaze on pastry: Working on one strip at a time, brush a thin, even layer of the apricot preserve mixture over the entire surface of the puff pastry strip.
  7. Arrange apple slices: Lay the softened apple slices along one edge of the pastry strip with the skin side facing outward, overlapping slightly to create the appearance of rose petals.
  8. Add cinnamon and fold: Lightly dust the apples with cinnamon, then fold the opposite side of the puff pastry strip over the apples to encase them.
  9. Roll into roses: Starting at one end, carefully roll the strip jelly-roll style to form a rose shape. Avoid rolling too tightly to allow the apple ‘petals’ to spread beautifully when baked.
  10. Place in muffin tin: Arrange each rolled rose into a well-greased muffin tin cup to hold its shape while baking. Repeat this process for all strips.
  11. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the apple roses for 25 to 35 minutes until the puff pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
  12. Cool and serve: Let the baked roses rest in the pan for about 5 minutes, then carefully remove them. Optionally dust with powdered sugar and serve warm by themselves or with a scoop of ice cream for an indulgent dessert.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Fuji or Gala for better slice holding when baking.
  • Adjust microwave softening time based on apple slice thickness for best flexibility.
  • Ensure puff pastry is properly thawed for easy rolling and handling.
  • Do not roll the pastry strips too tightly to allow for expansion and beautiful rose shapes.
  • Optional: sprinkle powdered sugar on top before serving for an extra touch of sweetness and presentation.
