Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 4 scallions (white and light green part only, minced)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • 2 teaspoons minced ginger
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 3/4 cup panko (or 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs)
  • 1 pound ground turkey (all white meat, dark meat, or a combination)

Orange Sesame Sauce

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (or more to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon chili paste (or hot sauce such as Sriracha)
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 2 scallions (white and light green part only, minced)
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine minced scallions, garlic, chopped cilantro, ginger, soy sauce, salt, black pepper, beaten egg, and panko breadcrumbs. Add the ground turkey and mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Form Meatballs: Using a large cookie scoop or your hands, shape the turkey mixture into 28 even-sized meatballs and place them evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake Meatballs: Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until a meat thermometer inserted in the center reads 165 degrees Fahrenheit, indicating they are fully cooked.
  5. Make Orange Sesame Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, combine soy sauce, water, orange juice, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, chili paste, minced ginger, garlic, scallions, and corn starch in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  6. Adjust Sauce Flavor: Taste the sauce and adjust acidity or sweetness by adding more rice vinegar or brown sugar according to your preference.
  7. Coat Meatballs: Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them into the saucepan with the orange sesame sauce. Stir gently to coat all meatballs evenly with the sauce.
  8. Serve: Serve the meatballs hot, garnished with additional minced scallions and sesame seeds for a delicious finishing touch.

Notes

  • Check meatballs with a meat thermometer to ensure they reach 165°F for safe consumption.
  • For a gluten-free option, replace soy sauce with tamari and use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Sriracha or another chili paste can be adjusted to control the heat level.
  • Leftover meatballs can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently to preserve moisture.
  • Use fresh orange juice for the best flavor in the sauce.
