Description

Amish Onion Fritters are crispy, golden-brown fried cakes made with chopped onions mixed into a lightly sweetened batter featuring cornmeal for added texture. Perfect as a savory snack or side dish, these fritters deliver a delightful crunch and sweet onion flavor, cooked quickly in a skillet for an easy and satisfying treat.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp cornmeal
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1-2 tsp salt, or to taste

Wet Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 medium onions, chopped (about 2 1/2 cups)
  • Oil, for frying (about 1/2 inch deep in skillet)

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Add milk: Pour the milk into the dry ingredients and stir gently to form a thick batter, ensuring no lumps remain.
  3. Incorporate onions: Fold in the chopped onions thoroughly until they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  4. Heat oil: Pour enough oil into a skillet to reach about 1/2 inch depth and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350-375°F (175-190°C).
  5. Fry fritters: Using a tablespoon, drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, slightly flattening each piece with the back of the spoon to ensure even cooking.
  6. Cook on both sides: Fry each fritter for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  7. Drain and serve: Remove fritters from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Adjust salt according to your taste preferences.
  • Use fresh onions for the best flavor and texture; sweet onions work well, but yellow onions are fine too.
  • Maintain proper oil temperature to avoid soggy fritters; too hot and they can brown too quickly without cooking through.
  • Serve with sour cream, applesauce, or your favorite dipping sauce for added flavor.
  • Fritters are best eaten immediately but can be kept warm in a low oven.
